RODRIGO DAIBERT
PHOTOGRAPHER & FILM MAKER MUNICH
ABOUT ME
I was born in a small city in the centre of Brazil in 1979. As the youngest of 3 boys, I grew up surrounded by sports, photography and art. My father established and ran his own newspaper, where he worked as editor-in-chief and photographer. Due to my father’s profession, our family moved around Brazil a lot, therefore opening my eyes to different places, people and cultures early on. Since I was a child, I knew about my multicultural heritage, coming from a family of German, Italian, Spanish and Native Brazilian background.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
From a young age, I had a very disciplined lifestyle. Five days a week, from 5 am, my two brothers and I would start training for local and regional swimming competitions, then heading off to school in the morning. After school and a long nap, I would get up to study and get to work. I would deliver pão de queijos (Brazilian cheese breads) to private households and clubs, restaurants and even sell it on the streets. During those deliveries, I would always carry my plastic Fuji camera and whenever I had the opportunity, I would take pictures of the people and things around me. Back in those days, I used to also love taking pictures of LP covers.
Age 14, I bought my first real camera, a Canon T 70, and my family and I went back to my home town, Itapaci. There, I started to teach swimming classes to kids, families and even coached the swimming team from the local school. However, photography and swimming were not my only interests, I also studied piano, dancing and acting. During my teenage years I participated in almost all plays organised by my school, local theatres and dancing institute. In order to save money to pay for my classes and tuition, my father employed me at his newspaper, where I was separating photos and negatives as well as delivering newspapers to the local kiosks.
Age 16, I moved to Goiania and started to swim professionally again, while also working for a German brand at the shopping mall.
RIO DE JANEIRO
Age 18, I moved to Rio de Janeiro, where I attended different courses in TV, theatre and photography. I was fortunate to be matched with a prestigious Brazilian actor for my internship and ended up touring with him.
After 2 years of living in Rio, I was offered a job at a bank and worked as a customer services supervisor and analyst. At this time, my salary allowed me to start travelling all over the world and I soon discovered my love for Europe. Fed up with the system in Brazil, I then decided to move to Germany.
TOURING LIFE
Luckily, I had good contacts in Germany and on my arrival I started working in musical theatre. I was involved and working in all aspects of the theatre, such as merchandising, stage management, props, wardrobe, company management and even promoting the show as a dancer on television.
From 2001 to 2011, I worked on European tours in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Italy and France. These shows included Grease, Hair, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, the Shaolin Monks, West Side Story, African Footprint and California Dream Men. Between my theatrical work, I also attended photography courses at art schools in Amsterdam, Vienna, London, Florence and Rio de Janeiro.
SETTLING IN MUNICH
In 2006, I moved to Munich, where I opened my first studio, specialising in photography and video editing. I never stopped studying to advance my knowledge and being able to travel all over the world has helped me to see the beauty in people, the arts and nature.
Today, I enjoy freelancing and working for a variety of media outlets, such as magazines, newspapers, TV and film.
